Inside Grand Canyon National Park, on the South Rim.
Best for: inside-park access without the historic rim-side buildings
South Rim · every distance band
"Near the Grand Canyon" covers everything from a room inside the park to a motel an hour away on I-40. This page removes the ambiguity by grouping every property in our guide into distance bands measured to the South Entrance Station, closest first. If proximity is what you are shopping for, read the band headings rather than the hotel names.
Reality check
Property names are not a distance signal. Several hotels in this guide carry Grand Canyon in their name and sit about an hour from the rim, while others with no canyon reference at all are five minutes from the entrance station.
Every figure on this site is road distance along the standard driving route to the South Entrance Station on AZ-64, with a typical off-peak drive time. We do not use straight-line distance, because you cannot drive in a straight line.
Two things these numbers deliberately exclude. First, queueing at the entrance station, which in peak summer can add substantially to a drive that is otherwise five minutes. Second, the extra 7 miles and roughly 15 minutes from the entrance station to Grand Canyon Village, where most of the viewpoints and services are. Add that to every outside-park figure if the village is your destination.
We do not currently list properties beyond 60 miles as canyon hotels. Flagstaff sits in that band and is a legitimate base for some trips, but calling an 80-mile hotel a Grand Canyon hotel stretches the term past usefulness.

Hotels inside the parkEvery property genuinely inside Grand Canyon National Park, how each differs, how they are booked and what to do when they are full.OpenInside the park, the lodges at Grand Canyon Village are the closest lodging of any kind, with rim viewpoints on foot. Outside the park, the Tusayan hotels are closest, about two miles from the South Entrance Station.
That depends on how many nights you have. For one night, anything over about half an hour costs you a meaningful share of your daylight. For three nights, an hour from Williams is a reasonable trade for the money and choice it buys.
Inside the park, yes: several Grand Canyon Village lodges sit on the rim itself. Outside the park, no. No hotel in Tusayan, Valle or Williams overlooks the canyon.
