Tusayan · at the gate
The South Entrance Station on AZ-64 is where most South Rim visitors enter the park, and the hotels closest to it are all in Tusayan, about two miles south. That is roughly five minutes of driving. This page compares them on the things that actually differ between them, because location does not.
Reality check
All these hotels are within a few minutes of each other. Choosing between them on distance is meaningless. Choose on amenities, review depth and rate.
This is the practical reason to stay at the gate. In peak season the queue at the South Entrance Station can add substantially to the journey, and it builds through the morning.
Staying two miles away means you can be at the station early enough to avoid the worst of it without a pre-dawn start from an hour away. It also means returning to your room mid-day and going back out for late afternoon light is a ten minute round trip rather than a two hour one.
