There is no luxury hotel at the Grand Canyon in the sense that word usually carries. What exists is a small group of properties in the upscale and premium bands, and they divide into two kinds: comfortable full-service hotels in Tusayan priced for their location, and premium unique stays priced for the experience. This page is honest about which is which.
Reality check
The upscale band near the Grand Canyon buys location rather than a better-reviewed room. Every property in the upscale band here scores lower than several value-band properties in Williams.
What the premium actually buys
In Tusayan, it buys minutes. The Squire, The Grand Hotel
and Holiday Inn Express sit in the upscale band and score 8.3 to 8.4. Those are
good scores. They are not better than El Rancho Motel at 9.0 in the value band
an hour away. The difference in price is the two-mile distance to the entrance
station, and for a short trip that is a reasonable thing to pay for.
In Valle and near Williams, it buys the stay itself.
Backland and Clear Sky Resorts sit in the premium band because they are
distinctive, not because they are close. Backland rates 9.5 but across only 66
reviews; Clear Sky rates 7.8 despite the premium price.
Where a genuine premium experience exists
Honestly, the strongest case for spending more near the Grand Canyon is not
a hotel at all. It is either an in-park lodge, where what you are buying is
access rather than comfort, or a well-run unique stay where the accommodation
is the reason for the trip.
If you want a conventional upscale hotel room, Tusayan is the answer and you
should expect a good modern hotel rather than a resort. We will not describe
these properties as luxury, because the data does not support the word.
A note on star ratings
Star classifications in our data come from Booking.com and are not a
consistent measure of quality. One Williams motel carries a five-star
classification while a well-regarded historic hotel in the same town carries
two. Where star rating and review score disagree, the review score is the more
useful signal, and we say so on the individual guides.
