Outside the park, close to the rim
If inside-park lodging is unavailable, or you simply want a better room than the village lodges offer, this is your list. Every property here is outside Grand Canyon National Park and ordered by how far it sits from the South Entrance Station. The nearest is about two miles away. The furthest in this guide is about 53.
Reality check
Every property on this page is outside the park boundary, including the ones with Grand Canyon in their name. None of them has a canyon view, and none is walkable to the rim.
For most travelers this comes down to two questions.
Is the morning drive the thing you most want to avoid? Then Tusayan, and the choice is between four hotels that are all within a few minutes of each other. Pick on amenities and rate rather than location.
Is the nightly rate the thing you most want to control? Then Williams, where the same money buys a considerably better-reviewed room and you get a town with an evening in it. You pay for that with about two hours of driving on every rim day.
Valle sits between the two geographically but is not a compromise between them. It is a different product: glamping and self-contained units rather than hotel rooms.
What it costs you is the entrance station every morning, and the option of walking to a viewpoint at dawn.
