Where this sits in the village

Thunderbird is the second of the two modern rim-side lodges, immediately alongside Kachina and built to the same purpose: more rooms on the rim, deliberately understated next to the historic buildings.

We are not going to manufacture a reason to prefer one over the other. They sit metres apart, they are the same kind of building, and no data we hold separates them. Availability and rate on your dates is the whole decision.

The real comparison is not Thunderbird against Kachina. It is either of them against a historic rim-side room, or against a modern full-service hotel fifteen minutes away in Tusayan.

Is Grand Canyon Village the right base for you?

The only way to wake up inside the park and reach a rim viewpoint without driving. The full picture of what that area gives you, and what it costs you in drive time, is on our Grand Canyon Village guide. If you have not settled on an area yet, start with where to stay at the Grand Canyon, which compares every base side by side.
