Where this sits in the village

Kachina is one of two low, modern lodges set directly on the rim between El Tovar and Bright Angel. They were built to put more rooms on the rim without competing architecturally with the historic buildings around them, which is why they are easy to walk past without noticing.

What that buys you is position without the historic-building premium. What it costs you is character: these are plain rooms in a plain building, in an extraordinary spot.

Kachina and Thunderbird are close enough to interchangeable that we will not invent a distinction between them. Book whichever is available.

Is Grand Canyon Village the right base for you?

The only way to wake up inside the park and reach a rim viewpoint without driving. The full picture of what that area gives you, and what it costs you in drive time, is on our Grand Canyon Village guide. If you have not settled on an area yet, start with where to stay at the Grand Canyon, which compares every base side by side.
